Trump Calls for Jailing of Windy City Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in City

Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday called for the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for failing to secure ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on social media early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements come alongside the arrival of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the current government, notwithstanding vehement protests from state officials such as the governor and mayor.

"This represents yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I am staying anywhere."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to yield. Trump is now demanding arrests of elected officials resisting his authority. What's next on the road toward complete authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood training facility, an army base approximately 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the administration advances with its hardline urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", even though police data indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, such as homicides.

On Wednesday, two hundred state guard members were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred state military forces readying for deployment, according to sources. Authorities reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid law enforcement duties but would protect federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Soldiers in combat attire with Texas national guard insignia were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Vehicles labeled "Disaster Relief" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Trailers were arranged in rows. Extra barriers was installed around the compound.

Aviation authorities imposed no-fly zones over the military base for safety concerns until 6 December.

Federal authorities has escalated deportation operations in the city in recent weeks, sparking protests, particularly near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city filed a lawsuit against the administration, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

A court hearing on their case is scheduled for the next day.

The mayor also signed an executive order on that day prohibiting ICE officers and others from using municipal facilities as staging areas for deportation efforts.

The governor has charged the president of using troops as "political props" and "chess pieces".

During a press briefing on the previous day, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act restricts the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. Yet, the president has said he would be prepared to invoke the Insurrection Act, which permits a president to send active duty military in states that are unable to put down an uprising or are defying federal law.

Since starting his second term, Trump has sent or mentioned sending military units to over ten cities, such as Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and protect immigration agents.

Statistics shows that serious offenses across the US has declined in the past few years. In the city, for instance, murders were down 31% to under three hundred through August, according to law enforcement reports.

A recent poll published on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the sending of military forces without an external threat.
